They're most visible in certain light — the harsh overhead fluorescent of an office bathroom, a phone camera up close, the merciless clarity of an HD video call. The pores on your nose and cheeks that look, in that light, like a topographic map of something that shouldn't be there.
The search for solutions for enlarged pores is one of the most active in Indian skincare, and one of the most littered with misinformation. The most important truth about pores: they are not doors. They do not open when warm and close when cold. The "open pore" is not an open pore — it is a stretched pore. And the difference changes everything about how you treat them.
Why some people have more visible pores — and why Indians often do
Pore size is primarily genetic. Indian skin, which tends to have higher sebum production and more active sebaceous glands, is more prone to the two things that stretch pores over time: sebum accumulation (which widens pores from the inside) and collagen loss (which weakens the surrounding structure that holds pores tight).
UV degrades collagen faster than any other environmental factor. Years of unprotected Indian sun on the face without SPF is the single largest accelerant of pore visibility, which is why sun protection is the most important long-term pore treatment available.

Niacinamide: the most practical daily pore treatment

Retinol: the longer game that changes the underlying structure
Retinol increases cell turnover, clears the dead skin and sebum that accumulate around pores, and — crucially — stimulates collagen production over time. This addresses both primary causes of enlarged pores: congestion and structural laxity. Takes 12-16 weeks to show meaningful results, but the improvements are more lasting than any other topical.
Chemical exfoliation: keeping pores clear from accumulation
AHA exfoliates the surface skin cells around pores, preventing the dead-skin buildup that visually enlarges them. BHA (salicylic acid) is oil-soluble and penetrates into the pore itself, dissolving the sebum and dead cell mix that stretches it open. For visible pores driven primarily by congestion — common on the nose and central face in Indian oily skin — twice-weekly BHA use is transformative within 4-6 weeks.
What pore strips actually do (and don't do)
Pore strips physically remove the oxidised sebum (blackheads) sitting at the surface of nose pores. They do this effectively. What they don't do: remove the sebum inside the pore, affect the size of the pore, or produce any lasting result. The blackheads return within 3-5 days because the underlying sebum production hasn't changed.
Repeated pore strip use can also damage the delicate skin and capillaries around the nose. A BHA serum left on overnight does the same job without the mechanical trauma, with results that last 10 times longer.

Pores will not disappear. They are functional — they are how your skin breathes, produces oil, and regulates temperature.
