Alpha ArbutinBenefits, how to use & safety
A calm, steady fader of stubborn marks.
What is Alpha Arbutin?
Alpha arbutin is a skin-brightening molecule that releases small amounts of hydroquinone-like activity without the harshness of prescription lighteners. It is a favourite for post-acne marks, sun spots and uneven tone, particularly in humid climates where pigmentation lingers.
How it works
It slows tyrosinase, the enzyme that drives melanin production, so new pigment forms more slowly while old pigment fades through normal skin renewal. Because it works steadily rather than aggressively, it suits long routines and sensitive skin.
Key benefits
- Fades post-acne marks and sun spots gradually
- Evens overall skin tone
- Gentle enough for daily use
- Pairs well with vitamin C and niacinamide
- Dark spots
- Post-acne marks
- Uneven tone
Best suited for: All skin types, including sensitive skin, where stronger lighteners are too irritating.
How to use it
Apply a 1–2% alpha arbutin serum morning and evening after cleansing, before moisturiser. Use sunscreen daily, as UV will undo the progress. Expect visible change in 8–12 weeks.
Pairs well & what to avoid
- Niacinamide for faster tone correction
- Vitamin C for antioxidant support
- Hyaluronic acid for comfort
- Very hot, strongly acidic formulas, where it can break down
- Using it as a replacement for sunscreen
Safety & side effects
Alpha arbutin is well tolerated; mild redness is uncommon. Stick to the recommended facial strength, and avoid products stored in heat. Ask your doctor before using brightening actives in pregnancy.
Frequently asked
Is alpha arbutin safer than hydroquinone?
It is considered gentler and is sold over the counter, but it is also milder. Hydroquinone is prescription-level and should only be used under medical supervision.
How long does alpha arbutin take to work?
Most people notice softer marks after 8–12 weeks of daily use with sunscreen. Deeper pigmentation can take longer.
Can I use alpha arbutin every day?
Yes. At 1–2% it is designed for daily use, morning or night.
