Hydrolyzed KeratinBenefits, how to use & safety
Protein patchwork for damaged hair.
What is Hydrolyzed Keratin?
Hydrolyzed keratin is keratin protein broken into small fragments that can enter damaged hair. It temporarily fills gaps in the cuticle, improving strength, smoothness and shine, particularly on bleached or heat-damaged hair.
How it works
The small protein fragments bind to damaged sections of hair, strengthening them and smoothing the surface. The effect is cosmetic and washes out gradually, so it needs regular repetition.

How to use it
Use a keratin-based mask or conditioner once every one to two weeks. Balance with moisturising treatments so hair does not feel stiff.
Pairs well & what to avoid
- Panthenol
- Argan oil
- Coconut oil
- Overuse that causes stiff, brittle hair
- Salon 'keratin' smoothing treatments containing formaldehyde-releasing agents
Safety & side effects
Hydrolyzed keratin in conditioners is generally safe. Protein overload can make hair rough and brittle. Be cautious of smoothing treatments that release formaldehyde, which is an irritant and sensitiser.
Frequently asked
What is protein overload?
Hair that feels hard, straw-like or snaps easily after too many protein treatments. Switch to moisture-focused products.
Is hydrolyzed keratin the same as a keratin smoothing treatment?
No. Smoothing treatments use chemical processes and sometimes formaldehyde releasers.
Is hydrolyzed keratin vegan?
It is often animal-derived. Check the label for plant protein alternatives.
